Essaouira's medina is its soul. Fading whitewashed walls and crumbling plaster line the maze of narrow alleyways, filled with the smell of incense and spices, at times bustling with farmers' carts, at times lazily soaking up the sun.

Essaouira (formerly 'Mogador') was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2001, as an example of a late 18th century fortified town.
