The Ben Youssef Medersa, hidden away in a corner of Marrakesh's medina, was once
a large Koranic school. Cool stone steps lead up to small dark rooms where
students once slept and prayed. Arched windows from some rooms overlook the
tranquil central courtyard.
North Africa's largest theological site where as many as 1000 students once
studied was built around 1570 by the Saadians and restored in 1950.
