The Ben Youssef Medersa, hidden away in a corner of Marrakesh's medina, is a 14th-century Koranic school. Walls of zellij (mosaic), stucco plasterwork, carved cedarwood and Koranic calligraphy surround a tranquil central courtyard.

North Africa's largest theological site where as many as 1000 students once studied was built around 1570 by the Saadians and restored in 1950.
